The String Thing
(String FX)

If you push on the top of the loop,
the bottom of the loop jumps up.
The "String Shooter" was born at the Exploratorium Science Museum in San Francisco.
A version of it, "String FX," is now available from Toys R Us, but has neither a base nor a plug for an external power supply.

The physics of the pendulum is overwhelmed by the physics of the String Thing.  The string stubbornly has a mind of its own and loves to paint graceful three-dimensional patterns and tie mysterious knots.

(The designer, Charles Sowers, designed an ingenious cut-off switch that gives the little engine a rest when the human waving The Thing too imaginatively asks it to do what even The String Thing cannot, or should not, do.)

It might crawl up your arm.
