These are the hills of Woods Creek (to the north) and Ash Creek (to the south).  The old electric railroad bed was cut through these hills, and high trestle bridges connected the track over such gulleys as was Woods Creek.  Today that route is Multnomah Blvd, and the trestles have been replaced with high land fills.  Multnomah Blvd was fitted with bike/pedestrian paths on both sides, and so this is the one truly level route in these hills.  The parallel, Garden Home Rd, on the other hand, dips and climbs as it connects Garden Home with Multnomah Village.

The hills of the two branches of Ash Creek are generally steeper and higher.  Running between the branches, and on a relatively flat ridge extending east to west, is Taylors Ferry Road in the part of town known as West Portland.

The lower right corner (SE) of the map is the Marquam School neighborhood, drained on the easy by upper Tryon Creek (via the fields of Jackson Middle School) and Arnold Creek.  Interstate 5 cuts across this corner and presents a barrier to pedestrians and bikers.  Crossings are possible  only at Pacific Highway and at Barbur/Capitol Highway.
 

Outstanding connector trails include:

• The trails through Hideaway Park connecting Hickman Lane, 66th Ave, and Oleson Rd.
• The trails through April Hill Park and footpaths to the east, connecting Miles St with Maplewood School.
• The short trail south of Multnomah Blvd at 61st Ave giving pedestrians the only connection between Multonomah Blvd and Garden Home Rd for over a mile.
• Brugger St is connected by demand trails between 51st Ave and 55th Ave.
• Monshadow Park gives a pedestrian/bicycle route from Alden to 68th Pl and 69th Ave.
• Trails through Woods Memorial Park connect the Capitol Hgy area near Marigold St with the streets near 45th Dr.
• Pedestrians can go West from Dickenson, near 64th and 65th by taking the county line trail north from Dickenson, which then connects to a variety of paths, north and west.  (Note the power distribution line that marks the county line here.)

Portland Parks Bureau parks include:

• Gabriel Park.  Big. Varied. With new community center.
• April Hill Park.  At Logan Ct, between 54th Ave and 59th Ave.  Playground equipment.
• Woods Memorial Park.  Deeply wooded, with extensive trail system (see map on this site).
• Dickenson Park.  Newly acquired by the city, and augmented with adjacent land.  Between 55 Ave and 57th Dr, north of Dikenson St.  The future of this park is currently under discussion.

• Hideaway Park.  At the southwest corner of the map, where the stream crosses Oleson R, a little south of Miles Ct. Trails connect to Hickman Lane and 68th Ave.
• Raleighwood Park. A wetlands on the Sylvan Ck branch of Fanno Ck. Accessible from Raleighwood Wy and Bancroft Wy.
• Moonshadow Park.  On Ash Creek, north of, and paralleling Alden St.  Paved trail connects to 68th Pl, to the north.

• Most maps show a grid of streets in the area surrounding 49th Ave and Marigold St, only a fraction of which actually exist.  The streets as shown would require high bridges to transverse the deep, steep ravines.  In addition, many maps show gross errors in the way the numbered, north-south streets cross Dolph Ct.  Dolph Ct is the east-west section line, and land survey corrections (needed because the earth is spherical, not a plane) are made here. These are often depicted incorrectly.  One maps shows an extra block tucked in near Dolph Ct and 50th Ave.
• Many maps show 62nd Ave connecting Pomona and Dickenson.  It doesn't.
