Mt Hood from Council Crest Park

Many people are discovering the joys, and the benefits, of community, of active participation in the society around us.  Medical researchers are more and more discovering that really good health depends on it.  They also tell us that physical and mental exercise are important, too.  Not a saunter between the greens with the golf bag in the back of the golf cart, or a straining at the questions on "Do You Want to Become a Millionaire?".  Hard exercise.  Right up to our current capacity — and then we must st r  e   t     c        h     .      .      .
. . . a little further.

Encourage community.  Promote wellness.  Enjoy.

Portland is outstanding in its public-spirited livability.  Portland promotes wellness.  (And wellness is a program at Portland's Oregon Health Sciences University, where the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual facets of life are nurtured.)

  • Walking (running and biking, too) routes are suggested via the links to the left.  Download a map and route description.  Discover a bit of the history of the region.

  •
  • The city has established seven official urban trails in Southwest Portland.  Learn where they are and discover the fascinating, little-known pedestrian advantages they reveal.

  •
  • Many maps are muddled melanges of inappropriate lines and confusing errors.  Discover a source of accurate maps.  (And join in the effort to cover the whole city with accuracy in mapping.)

  •
  • Portland has a remarkable Parks system.  The largest park within a city in the country.  A rich recreational and educational set of programs.  An outstanding staff of professionals, supported by a dedicated army of volunteers.  Discover some of the treasures by trying the "Scavenger Hunt."

  •
  • Neighborhood Emergency Teams are groups of neighbors trained by the Portland Bureau of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services to respond when major emergency overwhelms the city's resources.  Training is in hazards (especially earthquake), hazard mitigation, fire suppression, disaster medicine, light search & rescue, disaster psychology and response management, plus numerous specialized topics covered in advanced training.

  •
  • Neighborhood Watches are neighborhoods organized to keep and eye on potential trouble and ready for fast and effective response.  This program is organized through the Office of Neighborhood Involvement.

  •
  • Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc (SWNI) is one of Portland's neighborhood association coalitions.  Learn more about these groups by going to the Web-link map of Southwest Portland via the "Southwest Neighborhoods" link.

    Emergency!
What's the best way to respond:

When you don't quite know where the emergency is?
When the quicker you move the more likely your response works?
When it's better if someone behaving badly doesn't know you're watching?
When the crew on the ground can't see the way the fire is really moving?
When you'll do better if your vision extends into the infrared?
    <  FLIR (Forward-Looking InfraRed) camera!
And when your budget requires the most cost effective system that does the job?
LOOK UP!  There's a lot of space up there, and it has direct routes to everywhere (almost).
